Scope note
Structures, usually in cemeteries, designed to temporarily store the bodies of the deceased prior to interment in a permanent grave or tomb. They may include chambers dug into hillsides or free standing structures. Examples are receiving vaults used during winter months in climates where the ground may be frozen. For rooms or structures used for the hygienic temporary storage of corpses, not designed for visitation by mourners, prefer "morgues."
